Beyond Graduation Workshop and company from TO!
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

These past couple of days I've been delighted to have Irena visiting me from Toronto! She came out to attend a workshop with me called Beyond Graduation, put on by the Plan Institute. http://www.planinstitute.ca/ TIG helped to develop the online component (a fabulous website!). The workshop was aimed at youth with disabilities who will soon be, or recently have graduated from high school and their families. Unfortunately, we didn't get any youth out! There were lots of parents and people from PLAN affiliated organizations, but a definite lack of youth. That being said, the workshop went really well and there was lots of discussion, as well as lots of interest in the website! Yay!

So that was most of Saturday, which didn't leave too much time for Irena and I to hang out outside of the workshop, but we did get the chance to bond over our love of coffee and Daniel Craig (we went to see the new James Bond movie Saturday night). It was great to have her here.

Youth Engagement Presentation and Near Death Experience
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Hey all!

Just a super quick update on what I've been up to lately. I've been working on developing a Youth Engagement workshop with Andree and Leslie from Alberta's Youth Volunteer. Andree and I piloted it on Tuesday, and it went really well. We drove to Kananaskis, which is about a 4 hour drive from Edmonton, and made it there in one piece, despite narrowly avoiding a head-on collision on Hwy 2 because another car was driving the wrong way in our lane on a divided highway! That definitely got the adrenaline running early that morning. We arrived at the UofC biogeo something or other research facility, where the ACEE leadership clinic was being held about an hour before presenting. Although we ended up presenting to fewer people than we had anticipated, we had lots of great discussion and great ideas. We did some group work and everyone took on a "youthful persona" at the end....we had everyone from "the princess" to "the cool kid" to "the super engaged youth". We had lots of fun with that. Unfortunately, we ran a bit short on time and didn't have as much time to dedicate to our activity as we would have liked. Live and Learn!

Driving back we went through some wicked fog....we pulled over in Lacombe for a bit to try and find some highway condition reports....and then couldn't find our way back to the highway because the fog was so thick, we kept missing the exit signs! Happy to report that the fog soon cleared up and we made it home without further troubles. Whew!

Cheers!
-D
